Throughout our lifetime we are bound to make a few mistakes. The next question is can we learn from them. Are we able to rebound from them and not let that hinder our financial future? It’s never too late to:
- 1. Reduce debt
- 2. Start saving
- 3. Invest early
- 4. Keep your wealth invested to take advantage of compounded interest and dividends
- 5. Never put all of your eggs in one basket (all of your money in one investment)
The key is to never let one or two bad decisions keep you from moving forward and changing the direction of your financial destiny. What it does require however, is patience and for you to want to make a change now to control your family’s future.
What can you do now?
- Get organized. Dust the filing cabinet and start going through all of your financial documents such as mortgage statement, RRSPs, RESPs, TFSAs, pension plans if you have one, your life insurance policies, critical and disability illness policies and lastly your Will.
- Don’t dwell on your past. Sometimes it takes one bad investment trade, one error to paralyze us in not wanting to make another financial mistake. Do not focus on the negative but rather look at failures as a way of life teaching you a valuable lesson. It is best to take a step back and analyze what just happened and look at the bigger picture.
- If you fail to plan, your plan will fail. One of the hurdles I come across most with families and businesses is that the lack of planning can derail one’s future, that a business owner or breadwinner of a household bites off more than they can chew by trying to implement a large life plan with multiples stages all at once. Sometimes it may be better to have someone on your team who can help you build and maintain your customized plan and then stay on course. There are so many responsibilities in your life and sometimes it is hard to prioritize. Let an advisor help you and your family plan out and make retirement more achievable.
- Don’t ever let emotion get in the way of making your next decision. At times one may feel confused, disheartened or play the blame game. There is no such thing as the point of no return. You may feel like you have hit rock bottom, but remember there’s only one way up from here, up! Set yourself up for success should be your next move. Arm yourself with the ideal mindset, change your mental and emotional outlook, and with some help you will be off to the races.
